Background

BA (Dunelm); PhD (Dunelm). Previously taught at the University of Stirling where he was Director of Research in the Scottish Enterprise Foundation (1987-1994); the Director of the full-time MBA (1996-1998); the Director of the Stirling University Centre for Entrepreneurship (2001-2004) and Head of the Department of Management and Organization. Moved to the University of Edinburgh in November 2004 to take up the George David Chair of Entrepreneurship and Family Business. He has been a Visiting Professor at the Makerere University Business School since 2003.

Research Interests

Entrepreneurship and economic development, particularly in the context of developing economies (Uganda, Sri Lanka)

Entrepreneurship and the black economy in Africa

Habitual entrepreneurship and the formation of business groups

Female entrepreneurship particularly the supply of female academic entrepreneurs

Entrepreneurship and family businesses
